Atrial fibrillation (Afib) significantly increases the risk of blood clots forming in the heart, which can travel to the brain and cause a stroke. It looks at various health factors—such as age, high blood pressure, and history of heart failure—to determine if the benefits of blood-thinning medication outweigh the risks of bleeding.
