Calculate Adjusted Body Weight (AjBW) and Ideal Body Weight (IBW) for clinical pharmacy and medical dosing. Essential for patients with obesity.
For many medications, using a patient's actual body weight for dosing can lead to dangerous over-exposure, especially in patients with obesity where adipose tissue does not distribute drugs the same way as lean mass. Adjusted Body Weight (AjBW) is a critical pharmacokinetic parameter used to determine the correct dosage for specific drugs, such as aminoglycoside antibiotics and certain chemotherapeutic agents. Our service provides a streamlined way to calculate both Ideal Body Weight (IBW) and Adjusted Body Weight, ensuring clinical accuracy for specialized medical treatments.
How it Works
The tool first calculates the Ideal Body Weight (IBW) using the Devine formula based on the patient's height and gender. If the actual weight exceeds the IBW, it then calculates the Adjusted Body Weight by adding 40% of the excess weight to the IBW.
Calculation Formula
AjBW = IBW + 0.4 × (Actual Weight - IBW)
Calculation Examples
1. **Clinical**: For a 100kg male who is 175cm tall (IBW ~70kg), the Adjusted Body Weight would be **82.0kg**.
Why use this tool in your daily life?
This service is an essential tool for healthcare providers, pharmacists, and medical students. By automating complex dosing weight calculations, it reduces the risk of medication errors and supports the delivery of safe, evidence-based patient care.
